Responsive, cloud-hosted simulations to refresh legacy statistics courseware
An education technology provider needed to modernize legacy courseware that lacked interactivity and worked only on Windows devices. CES built a responsive simulation platform as a Progressive Web App (PWA) using a reusable framework, enabling interactive math and statistics simulations across devices. The new courseware improved accessibility, visual appeal, and customer adoption across schools and institutions.

The Need
The provider needed a responsive web application with multiple interactive simulations to support statistics learning. The goal was to move beyond a Windows-only legacy product, improve interactivity, and deliver consistent access across devices through a cloud-hosted model.
Challenges
- Legacy limitations: The existing application did not offer interactive simulation features expected in modern courseware.
- Windows-only access: The courseware could not reach learners across phones, tablets, and modern browsers.
- No reusable simulation architecture: The team lacked a scalable framework to build new simulations without rebuilding components each time.
- Reusable framework for simulation delivery: Built a reusable structure to create multiple simulations (math, statistics, related topics) with minimal customization.
- Interactive controls for learner input: Created jQuery-based UI controls (sliders, buttons) to capture user input and drive simulation behavior.
- JSON-based simulation logic and plotting triggers: Triggered JSON data values to plot and update simulation elements based on user interaction.
- Simulationrenderingand responsive page build: Developed simulations using on-screen elements such as axes, lines, curves, circles, and combined them into accessible web pages per simulation.
- Validation for content, responsiveness, and accessibility: Tested simulation content, responsiveness, and accessibility across pages to ensure consistent behavior across devices.
- Courseware migrated and hosted on the cloud (SaaS model)
- Interactive simulations accessible across platforms and devices
- Refreshed UI aesthetics improved product differentiation in a competitive market
- Supported new customer onboarding across schools and educational institutions after release
